How to Make a Homemade Necklace Using Beads

Handmade beaded jewelry adds artistic flair to any outfit. Necklaces of colorful stone, glass and ceramic beads not only complement your fashion style, but also express your personality. To create a homemade necklace, select beads from a craft store for a one-of-a-kind design that will catch the eye of friends and family.

1 Place a cotton hand towel over a table to prevent the beads from sliding around. Create a design for the necklace using the beads purchased from a craft store. Line up the beads on the towel in the order they will be strung on the flex wire.

2 Measure the flex wire against a ruler, and using a wire cutter snip the ends 4 inches longer than the length of the necklace. For example, if you are making a 16-inch necklace, cut the flex wire 20 inches in length.

3 Insert the flex wire through the crimp bead and slip 1 1/2-inches of the end of the wire through the eye of a clasp. Fold the flex wire over to create a loop. Slide the crimp bead up, and insert the end of flex wire through the bead. Set the crimp bead 1/4 inch below the clasp eye, and crimp it with the tip of the flat nose pliers.

4 String the beads onto the flex wire in the order placed on the cotton hand towel. Tuck the folded end of the flex wire into the first four beads strung, to conceal the loose end of the wire. Continue adding the beads to the flex wire until the all beads have been strung, and stop 2 inches before reaching the end of the wire.

5 Run the flex wire through a second crimp bead after stringing all of the beads. Insert 1 1/2 inches of the flex wire through a second clasp eye. Slide the crimp bead 1/4 inch below the clasp eye and fold the flex wire over.

6 Thread 1 1/2 inches of flex wire through the crimp bead, and flatten the bead with the tip of the flat nose pliers to secure the end of the necklace. Tuck the end of the flex wire into the beads to conceal the ends.

Acrylic beads are fun to work with as they can be used almost anywhere. acrylic AB color plated beads are also relatively inexpensive and come in a wide variety of options of colors, shapes and sizes. You can get more information from wholesale beads.
